Today marks the beginning of Carers Week (6th June to 12th June) which is an annual campaign that seeks to raise the awareness of caring and carers in communities across the country.
There are over 16,000 carers in Newport who do an amazing job for their loved ones. They not only deserve recognition for the loving care they provide, but also support from people and organisations in their communities. Many carers face unnecessary difficulties and we must do all we can to remove them. That is why I have pledged my support for Carers Week and to support carers whenever I can in the assembly.
According to the 2011 census, there were 5,430,016 carers in the UK, 370,230 in Wales and 16,604 in Newport. It is estimated by Carers UK that there will be a carer population of 9 million by 2037.
