I strongly oppose Welsh Conservative proposals to remove the current cap on tuition fees in Wales – meaning that Welsh students could pay up to £9,000 if the Conservatives took control of the Assembly.
In a week when the UK Tory Government has cut maintenance grants for the poorest students in England, the Welsh Conservatives seem eager to follow in their footsteps.
At the moment a student on a full-time three year undergraduate degree in Wales has around £17,000 less debt at the end of their course than a student resident in England. This would all change if there was a Tory First Minister this May.
A tuition fee hike would hit students from Newport hard. Not only would it be a financial barrier preventing many from being able to go to University, it would also saddle students who did go with significant debt.
