I welcomed the recent Sport Wales survey which suggests that around 50% of young people in Newport are ‘Hooked on Sport’. The figures presented in the survey, which monitors weekly engagement in sporting activity, suggest that half of Newport schoolchildren aged over 7 participate in sport more than three times a week.
It’s good news that so many young people in Newport are taking part in regular sporting activity, and great credit must go to the teams at Newport City Council and Newport Live – as well as our young people, their parents and schoolteachers – who actively encourage children of all ages, backgrounds and abilities to find a form of sport or exercise which suits them.
It was also good to see an notable increase in Newport’s overall ‘hooked on sport’ rating since the 2013 survey was completed, and we can be proud that we are now one of the highest performing areas in Wales when it comes to young people engaging in sport.
