Stroke patients in Newport will benefit from the new specialist stroke unit at the Royal Gwent Hospital.
The new unit forms an important part of a new care pathway for stroke patients in Gwent and the development of a more streamlined and effective service. A key feature of the new ‘pathway’ is a more efficient link between physiotherapy, speech and nursing professionals at hospitals across Gwent, including Nevill Hall, Ysbyty Ystrad Fawr and St Woolos Hospital.
Outcomes for stroke patients in Wales are improving, with the number of stroke-related deaths in Wales down by 26% since 2014. The precise re-design of care structures within Gwent can hopefully build on progress being made in Wales, with an improvement in services for recovering stroke patients.
