It was great to be at the launch of a new Women’s Institute branch in Afon Village this week.
The Afon Belles WI are one of around fifty Women’s Institutes across Gwent, with over 1500 members in the region. The Belles are one of two Institutes serving the Rogerstone area; along with the Rogerstone Roses WI who meet in High Cross.
The Afon Belles have already set out a programme of social and educational events throughout the Spring, with two meetings a month taking place at the Rivermead Centre.
Since the formation on the organisation during the First World War, the Women’s Institute has provided a great many women with opportunities to build new skills, socialise, and campaign on local issues that matter to them.
It was a real pleasure to be at the launch of the Afon Belles, who are led by an energetic committee which is full of ideas and positivity. I know that the Rogerstone Roses WI group based in High Cross has already proved a great success, so it would be lovely to see the Afon Belles develop along the same lines; offering a great outlet for friendship and activities for women in Afon Village.
