Remembering a Newport war hero

It was a real privilege to attend a service to commemorate the life and achievement of Newport war hero John Wallace Linton VC this week.

The service, which was held on the banks of the River Usk, was attended by national and local representatives of the Royal Welsh Comrades Association, the Royal Naval Association and the Merchant Navy Association. Prayers were led by Revd Edward Mathias-Jones, the Vicar of St Stephen’s in Pill and the Chaplain to the Newport branch of the Royal Naval Association.

Malpas-born Commander ‘Tubby’ Linton, who served in the Royal Navy in the Mediterranean and the Far East, died with his crew when his submarine was hit by a depth-charge off the coast of Italy in 1943.

The citation accompanying his posthumous Victoria Cross speaks of a naval career defined by ‘conspicuous gallantry and extreme devotion to duty in the presence of the enemy.’

It’s important that we remember this Newport war hero, as well all those who sacrificed their lives in the battle against fascism in World War Two.
