Tackling domestic abuse

Newport’s inspiring Rachel Williams – a victim of domestic violence – is supporting the ‘Drive’ campaign which aims to give one-on-one support to men who pose a high risk to their partners, and help them to change. St Joseph’s Boxing Club’s Tony Borg is supporting Rachel to raise awareness of the campaign.

I caught up with Rachel, Tony and Public Services Minister Leighton Andrews AM today, and it was really interesting to discuss what ‘Drive’ – currently still a pilot scheme in the South Wales police force area – could achieve in Newport, Gwent and across Wales.

I am proud that the Welsh Labour Government passed the groundbreaking Women, Domestic Abuse and Sexual Violence Act last year, but we must continue to work together as a society to raise awareness of the prevalence of domestic abuse in Wales, and do all we can to eliminate it.

Here’s a link to the South Wales Argus coverage of Rachel’s continuing good work: http://www.southwalesargus.co.uk/…/14282201.Newport_domest…/
