Firebreak: Keep Newport Safe

Member of Senedd for Newport West, Jayne Bryant is urging people in Newport to help keep everyone safe ahead of the firebreak coming into force at 6pm on Friday 23rd October.

The firebreak period covers social events such as Halloween and Bonfire Night. However, until then Newport still has local restrictions in place and people should not be looking to have parties or trick or treating to before the end of the week.

Jayne Bryant MS said:

This is a time of year we traditionally spend with family and friends, but this year must be different. The virus is circulating in every part of Wales and our critical care units are already full. The restrictions are being brought in to protect everyone, it is not about what we aren’t able to do during these next two weeks, but about asking ourselves what contribution can I make? What can I do to make this period work for Wales?

“The firebreak is a preventative measure so we can reduce the strain on our NHS, key workers and economy. If we act now, we have a better chance at recovery and slowing the second wave.

“I urge the people of Newport to stay home. It’s our best chance at controlling the virus.”

In a press conference on Monday the First Minister said if there wasn’t a firebreak:

“We would have to take even more extreme measures to bring the virus under control – we would be looking at an open-ended national lockdown, like the one we had in March.”

We won’t see the results of a firebreak period immediately, but it will save lives. A full and in-depth list of changes to the rules can be found at: https://gov.wales/coronavirus-firebreak-frequently-asked-questions.

Businesses affected by firebreak will be supported. If you have any issues or concerns email: [email protected]

If you need support, you can contact the Welsh Government ‘CALL’ mental health helpline on 0800 132 737 or text 81066.
